Is Ground News Reliable and Unbiased?
This is the question most of you searched to answer, so let me be precise about how the ratings work.
Ground News does not rate outlets itself. Each publication's political bias and factuality ratings are an average of the assessments published by three independent news-monitoring organisations, where available: AllSides, Ad Fontes Media, and Media Bias Fact Check. The Ground team's own words: they leave the ratings to the experts. I think that's the right call, because it removes the temptation to tilt ratings toward whatever keeps subscribers comfortable.
Now the caveats, because a reliability section that only reassures you isn't one.
The raters skew US-centric. All three monitoring organisations are strongest on American media. Ratings for smaller international and regional outlets are thinner, and some carry no rating at all.
New media lags behind. Fast-growing independent outlets and Substack-era publishers sometimes show “untracked bias” because the raters haven't caught up. You can flag a disagreement with a source's rating for review, which helps, but the gap is real.

I've spent 30 years in cyber security, and a surprising amount of that job is deciding which sources to trust under uncertainty. That's what threat intelligence is. It's also, it turns out, what reading the news properly is.

The walkthrough that shows it best: the deepfake CFO case. In early 2024, a finance worker at a multinational in Hong Kong paid out $25 million after a video call with what turned out to be an AI-generated deepfake of the company's chief financial officer, first reported by the South China Morning Post.
